Paraglider

I was sitting on the balcony of our apartment in Phuket, dozing over the corrections to my new novel, when I was awoken from my reverie by what sounded like a large lawnmower flying overhead. Looking up, the beast turned out to be a powered paraglider (aka paramotor) skimming the roof and the treetops. Grabbing the camera, I fired off a few shots as the pilot swished around and then descended into the valley over the local village and out over Kamala bay. Looks like fun!

Happy Geishas

These ladies were not real geishas, just two of many Japanese ladies one Saturday morning in Kyoto taking advantage of a festival to dress up and wander the streets of the old town. They were loving the fun of the spectacle and a warm October day.

Taken in pre-digital days on Fujichrome Astia 100 transparency film with a Canon EOS3 and Canon 70-200mmf2.8L lens. Scanned with a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000 ED scanner.

Montecchio maiden

Montecchio is a village in Tuscany on the road between Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona. As a village, you’d drive through it without noticing it, but up on a hill behind is a medieval castle that opens its doors once a year in September for a medieval pageant lasting two days. It’s a very local affair, attracting people from all over the surrounding area. As well as the main players such as members of the procession, knights, maidens, flag throwers, trumpters etc, there are stall-holders also dressed up in medieval costume preparing traditional doughs as well as the ubiquitous pastas.
This beautiful maiden was part of the main procession that wound its way up from outside the castle and through the grounds, passing trumpeters blowing fanfares, and culminating in a formal ceremony prior to jousts and flag throwing. The wonderful thing about Tuscany is that when the people dress up in the costumes of 500 years ago, they are look like they have stepped out of a renaissance fresco – all the facial features are there.

Going fishin’

At low tide on the reef all along the Kenyan coast, huge numbers of fishermen make their living searching for shellfish and reef fish. This patient man was pictured at Mtwapa a little north of Mombasa.
